I attended the Palm Springs International Film Festival for the second year, and one of my favorite viewing experiences was an ambitious documentary series titled The Story of Film: An Odyssey. Directed by Irish filmmaker Mark Cousins, the series is a 15-hour chronicle of world film from the 1890s through the beginning of the millennium.

Film for me is the most important art form of the last 116-plus years. Movies have the power to change lives. In my 36 years at Facets, I've seen films help kids who have trouble in school connect to learning. As soon as I noticed this indie film on the Cinematheque schedule, I became enamored with the title. Haunting and romantic, “Night Catches Us” stands in contrast to the colorless clichés and dull, literal titles of contemporary Hollywood releases.
