Facets' DVD of the Day

Castro's out the door, so the introductory title for our new DVD of the Day feature is a no-brainer.

Waiting for Fidel is a documentary classic that unfortunately fell through the cracks. Luckily, Facets' exclusive DVD label picked up the slack a few years back to re-introduce this essential film to the masses.

Brilliantly executed and punctuated with wonderful Cuban music, the film follows the former socialist premier of Newfoundland, Joey Smallwood, the Newfoundland-born broadcasting magnate Geoff Stirling, and award-winning Australian-Canadian filmmaker Michael Rubbo (who also directed) through a strange limbo as they wait days on end to meet with Fidel Castro in Cuba. Their wait itself becomes the subject of the film, as the trio embarks on a wide-ranging, often humorous, and powerfully compelling dialogue on Cuba, Canada, socialism, capitalism, and many other issues.

Do they ever come face-to-face with the El Presidente? Check out Waiting for Fidel to find out.
